Me Around the World

As humans, we do not realize how naturally self-centred we are. It’s amazing how, just as we want the world to feel our pain in our loss, we also want the world to experience our joy.

You wouldn’t see it as out of place to require that when you’re grieving, the world should grieve too. You’d want the world to be sad when you’re sad. How can you suffer a loss when someone gets married somewhere in the world? How can you be in pain when someone is tasting ice cream for the first time?

A loved one passes away, and you’d expect the world to be silent for a few minutes, like nobody should move. To you, everyone should know that you experienced a loss. Everyone should mourn with you.

Grief, despite being irrational as it clouds our present judgment sometimes, makes sense. I believe it is the only point where being self-centred should be tolerated.

Regardless, in one’s journey in life, we need reminders that it isn’t you around the world; it is the world around you.
